Katie Compton - TREK SRAM

Katie Compton announced today that for the 2012-2013 season, she will be making a return to riding on SRAM componentry. The announcement was just in time, the eight-time Nationals winner recently announced that in July, she’ll be taking on an early cyclocross season in New Zealand.

Compton says, “I missed my SRAM RED. Last year I was not racing on RED and I was dropping my chain regularly, I couldn’t be sure of when I shifted, and I just never had a good feeling. My first ride back on RED and everything just clicked into place, I felt like I was home again. I had my most fun ride in a year, it was 34 degrees and raining, and I rode for three hours and loved it.”

“Katie is the consummate professional and defines success, we are excited to have her back, it seems that the foothold that we established in Cross early on continues. Next year is going to be exciting with the new Trek Cyclocross racing team, obviously Katie back on our equipment, and all the great rivalries that always exist in the sport of cyclocross,” said Alex Wassmann, SRAM Sponsorship Manager.
Compton will race for the all-new TREK Cyclocross Race Team, who will reserve their full roster and sponsorship announcement for August 1. Trek’s Michael Mayer said, “We’re excited to have Katie back on Trek as well as partner with SRAM. We will have a strong racing program for the upcoming season starting with Katie.”

Tuesday Night 'Cross - Review

I would say a cat 4 field of over 50 and maybe exceeding 60 is a good sign for 'cross racing in the DFW area.

What a cool night.  Rolled up at about 6pm to a full parking lot, actually cars were already parking along the long road running by the race.  The course was setup on a smallish corner of the property with plenty of room to be a spectator.  Nice amount of elevation and Bryan did a great job of making the most of it.  Both dismounts were immediately followed by a run up.  The third run up of the night did not come after a barrier, rather it was such a tough off camber section that finished with a 90 degree uphill that just about all riders dismounted well before.

TNX has been going down well before others were on board with this sport.  Thank you to Bryan and the guys at Dallas Bike Works for this.  It has not always been perfect or the best venue but its so big they got it going and kept it going.  Big thanks to those guys.

Did the heart good to see so many young riders out there.  Matrix Cycling Club has truly done a great job reaching out and embracing the juniors.  Great to see them and their parents trying their hand in cross.

A CALL TO ACTION - This is the 2nd cross race in a week I have been to with little to no cowbell.  Come out to a local race, bring your cowbell and make some noise.  It does help those riders keep going.

Specialized Airlock Tubes - For some reason I put a couple of airlock tubes on my cross bike.  Boy I am glad I did.  I went to the truck to get my bottle about 10 minutes before the race.  I noticed after ridding my bike through the higher grass near the road there was a vine attached to the front wheel.  As I pulled the vine off I realized it was connect to my tire and tube underneath by a nasty thorn.  Grabbed it, ripped it out and watched as the white sealant made a pin whole size mark.  So glad I did not have to change a tube 10 minutes before the race.  If you run tubes get a Specialized Airlock next time you need one.  They work well.

Racing in the Desert - Cross Vegas

I know its not Texas 'cross racing but it was so cool to be part of such a cool event I feel compelled to share my excitement.

Who would have thought you hop a plane for the desert and you show up to 2 days of rain.  Conditions were slick and wet.  I almost changed tires before leaving for a hardpack specific tire, but thankfully I left my all condition tires on.  Better safe than sorry.  I sure did need them.  Happy to report I kept the bike and myself upright for the entire 45 minutes.  Maybe I was not going fast enough?

The Course
The layout was positioned at a Vegas soccer complex about 5 miles from the strip.  The start was chaos - just me and 150+ of my closest friends sprinting for the first corner, it was absolutely crazy!  Pretty good elevation for the roughly 1 mile loop.  The course had 1 section of barriers and 2 run-ups that became more and more brutal with each lap.

What a great way to start off the 'cross season, a race under the lights in Las Vegas.

If you are reading this from the Dallas/Ft Worth area make it a point to head out to a race soon.  There is a Tuesday night and Thursday night series about to get going in the next week or so.  Don't have a 'cross bike?  Ride your mountain bike or call or visit Richardson Bike Mart, I hear they have a brand new rental fleet of 'cross bikes to rent.  They might even have them to demo at the local races.

Last but not least a Big Texas sized 'thank you' to Brook Watts the man behind the race.  He did a great job again this year and deserves so much credit bringing such positive attention to this race and discipline of cycling.  Thanks Brook, you did a great job.
